While in a haze of live streams from the #occupy protests, rewriting Our American Myth and rehearsing with the best ensemble in the goddamn world. An idea came to fruition. #OccupyBroadway. The words to the song came out of riffing on our politician in our show and then became a wider commentary on all that’s been going on around us. And so, here is a little piece of our voice, and we’re calling it #OccupyBroadway.

We hope you like it, we think a little humor can resonate and spread an idea…help a movement… and if you do go out and make something riffing off our little idea, share it with us!

LYRICS

Everyone tells you that the minute you’re elected
Every single lobby in the world
Suddenly finds you attractive
Well, that’s not true
It only affects the scum
You never wanted to deal with
And you wouldn’t give them the time of day before
And now they’re banging down your door
And slipping you 20 Gs
At least that’s what it feels like but you
Can
Not
Trust
Them
In fact, you shouldn’t even speak to them
Close your eyes, close your eyes, close your eyes
Except you’re sitting there
Eating your cornish game-hen
And all of a sudden, this high priced escort walks by
And smiles at you
And you’re like “I love this job!”

In a more perfect union
A miracle would happen
And Big Tobacco would fly away
And it’d be me and Congress,
Deep pockets woudn’t matter
But it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine
I mean, I’m honest
And I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine
It’s not a problem
It’s a privledge
No, a right! Purchase
Legislation

And I have to say that
What exacerbates the problem
Is there’s these benefits
I’m the center of attention
I’m the Vee Eye Pee
And here they come:
“Let’s take a trip to tahoe
Have you heard of my SuperPAC”
And I’m showing them my flag pin
I’m gesticulating to my flag pin
And then WHOOMP! John Stewart!
‘Cause he knows
(He always knows)
And there’s that really awkward moment
Where I try to show It wasn’t bribery
(Though of course It sort of was)
And I don’t want to flip-flop on The Daily Show
Which is dumb – I shouldn’t care about his viewers
Since they won’t vote anyway!
In a more perfect union
A miracle would happen
Corporate money would be limit-ED.
And it’d be me and Congress
Writing legislation
But it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine
I got elected.
And it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine
I’m what you WANTED.
And I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine!
It’s not a problem
It’s a right
It’s their right! Buying
Representation
